Latin American Comic Books
In 1942, Richard C. Rothschild, AJC director of public information and education, was contacted by Nelson Rockefeller, then U.S. Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs, on the need to counter the spread of Nazi propaganda in Latin America. Rothschild assisted, working on pro-democracy posters and comic books. Within the Richard C. Rothschild Collection there are two Latin American comic books, Nuestro Futuro-Hombres Libres, O Escalvos? (Our Future, Free Men or Slaves?) and Herois Verdadeiros,(True Heroes). Supplementary documentation exists for only the first of these two books. From Rothschild’s papers, we know that he developed the theme for Our Future- Free Men or Slaves? and Nathan Schachner of the AJC wrote the copy.
